2-piece stock?

I have a two band Snider MkIII rifle which has the stock in two pieces, joining under the lower barrel band. Is this a repair or were any made this way? If this due to a damaged forestock it must have been done quite a while back as the mating ends of the wood do not appear to have been cut in recent years.
Thanks for any help.

Have been thinking of this for a long time. Just ordered me a Snider from IMA. My other goal is a Martini Henry. I have quite a collection of Military fire arms. the oldest being 1873 trapdoors rifle and carbine. WW I and WWII So have loaded Black powder for the trap doors and smokeless also. I cant wait to get the Snider and start cleaning and working up loads for them.

After getting the new mould I started working on loads but also got to wondering about the extra D and the stand or rack # I assume 168 also the small 211 on the right side of the butt could tell a person The only other numbers are the usual proof, inspectors, broard arrows. What say you educated historians. cheers Ian

New: Ammo Box, Long Rifle, Cavalry Carbine

Hi all,

It has been great to read all of the posts and I thought I should finally join.  I picked up my Long Rifle and Calvary Carbine at auction last summer and the year before.  This past summer I made an ammo box to scale (next one will be even better) and have had a joy shooting .595 (from Track the Wolf) and .588 solid base minies manufactured in Maitland, Ontario by R&R Bullets.  We could only extend as far back as 40 yards at the farm so I didn't get to graph the results at 50 & 100 yards.  That will be next summer.  For loads I used 24 gauge plastic shells cut to .195, 70 grs FFG,  felt or paper wads, SPG lube,

I picked up a sight cover for the Cavalry Carbine on Ebay and a snap-cap.  For the long rifle, I had a sling made for it.

Question 1: On my Cavalry Carbine, lock plate 1862, the trigger guard has a rear sling swivel hole and I have never seen that on any of the pics I've seen...

Canadian Militia Snider?

Hello!
I just picked up this Snider Enfield from a Maine estate. I surmise that the markings are Canadian militia? Also, that it might have been issued to the 67th Carleton Light Infantry? Any help you can give me on the markings would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Nick

Picked up a BSA Co 1871 Snider MKIII all complete so need to decide on the bullet some use HB others say flat base I think the original had a hollow base with a plug inserted, saw one video where he filled it with wax, which in someone's opinion is better to use. I also would like to know what size bullet I ran a ball of lead down the bore and the high reading came out .586 so do not know how close I am any ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated, also the person test fired the rifle and used a DC Co cartridge smokeless powder and the case only measured 1.601 and case mouth expanded to .641 and comments on the short case it is headstamped 577.

Are the bore's on the conversion 1853 Sniders from percussion to cartridge larger than the MKIII Snider,I have been reading some are shooting the conical bullet and some round balls up to .600 I am in the process of trying both in my newly acquired Snider MKIII and do not want to have to large a ball jammed in there, comments greatly appreciated.

HERSEY! I shoot smokless in my Snider

smiley: pimp I have a couple articles around here someplace I'd read years ago about the Snider, and one had to do with using smokless powder. My luck to date using BP has been rather lackluster. I suppose a charging bunch of Fuzzy Wuzzies would be in danger once within 100 yards or so, but I'd merely be "Shooting Amongst'em" . Once advanced to maybe 25 yards I'd then be able to select individuals as targets.

The carbine. It's a cut down rifle with a Mkll** action, lock plate dated 1861. I believe I'd posted about it before, long ago. A buddy of mine in Canada discovered I fooled with Sniders (I have a 3 band) and he asked if I'd like ot have some parts. I said sure (duh!). He sent the carbine all taken apart and the only thing missing was the hammer screw. Whoever hacksawed the barrel off left it...

1870 Fenian Raid weapons

Hello-
I have always been keenly interested in the Fenian Raids, most especially that which took place in 1870 at the Battle of Eccles Hill ( I wrote my college senior thesis on this battle). I thought you might be interested to see the two weapons used during that battle ( leaving out the Ballard Rifles used by the Canadian irregulars) the Canadian militia Snyder conversion of the Enfield Rifle, and the Irish used Needham conversion of the Springfield Rifle-Musket. This battle was probably one of the first in history in which both sides were primarily armed with breech-loading rifles.

Which Snider?

This will probably sound a bit crazy but I just bought it at auction unseen.
Well I've not had a Snider before and if my luck holds true it might be interesting.
At this stage I'm looking for suggestions as to what it might be prior to its arriving.
My guess is a Sporting version, but I'm wondering what was on the stock where the mark is.
On enlargement I can see the trigger guard takes a swivel. Nothing else of note excepting a badly pitted band.
Oh, it's chequered fore and aft of the lock.
Can't do any better with the pics, that's all I have.

IMA Snider lock

A few weeks back I purchased a Snider from IMA, cleaned and complete and hand selected. Being fairly new to Sniders I have been taking my time getting to know this old rifle. There was still some clean up that needed to be done and I have slowly been using the Kramer products to bring it back to life while keeping it as original as possible. The one thing that concerned me was the lock. When I cocked the hammer to full cock position it felt "mushy" and insecure. Somethimes when I pulled the trigger it would drop to half cock and then all the way down. Yesterday I pulled the lock off (thank you Carignan Salieres for your detailed sticky) and found out why. The lock mechanism was pretty much gunked up with grease. I disassembled the lock itself and cleaned every component. I also did the same to the trigger. Lightly oiled the parts and put it back together. It works crisply and perfectly now. There is always a great satisfaction in taking apart and fixing a firearm for the first time....

Snider barrel lining

Question guys, my snider has had about 50 rounds through it and while cleaning it the patch kept catching on something with a bore light i found a sliver of metal sticking out around the rifleing im not sure  if its a bristle from my brush or the lining has a piece of the lining seperated. Dont have a bore scope any ideas. Also is it possible to have a liner put in the barrel and who does this or do they only do this to muzzleloaders.  I used a guy in pennsylvania to line reline one of my barrels is it possible with a snider or do you replace the barrel. Anyone know of anyone in michigan that has a bore scope. The sliver is faceing foreward. Im not gonna shoot it until i know this sliver is safe. PS its about 8 inches from the muzzel of the gun.

Question: Has anyone used birdshot in Snider? Spread pattern?

Hi,

I was thinking of making some birdshot shells for shooting skeet and fowl with my Cavalry Carbine and wondered if anyone has tried it.  I was thinking of #7 or #8 lead with a card wad and overshot wad but wondered if it is even worth the effort.  If you have tried it, what is a suggested powder charge FFG and do you know how the rifling might affect the spread.

Thanks,

David

DCCo 57 Snider "Cadet" Cartridge?

On this and other forums the 1 5/8" case length 57 Snider ctg by Dominion Cartridge Co is called a "cadet" round. It certainly was not a reduced load since it was loaded with 5 more grains BP than the service round. All DCCo catalogues and box labels I have examied have said "for Snider rifles".
Can anyone post a pic of a DCCo box label or catalogue calling this a cadet cartridge?

After reading a lot of the post I think I am going to leave my snider in the white. I just received my sling for a P 1853 from Duvall Leatherwork. A very nice sling already oiled and greased. Will buy more if I get another Snider.

A month or so ago I posted some pictures of a Canadian issue Snider Cadet.

It was issued to the 13th Battalion (Hamilton, Ontario Canada).

http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/reply/101953/Snider-Cadet-Carbine-Local-Holy-Grail-with-pics#reply-101953

The 13th is my local Battalion where I live and grew up here in Canada.

It is one of the hardest Battalions to find here in Canada issued in the Sniders.
I was full of excitment finding the cadet.

Well today, my Holy Grail was fulfilled.

I picked up an Snider Mk III - 1871 Enfield - 3 band

It came with the sling, bayonet, scabbard and belt frog all issued to the 13th Battalion.
